ABSTRACT

Although Music Department at Ewha College was the only registered music institution in college level in the colonial Korea, it has been sparsely discussed as a part of Korean modern music history. The lack of discussion regarding Ewha Music Department seems to be derived from the narrow scope of music historiography, which was confined to the musical activities only by Korean, and held in Korea. Investigating the musical activities of Music Department at Ewha College, I attempt to broaden the scope of previously written Korean modern music history: As Ewha College was an institution governed by American missionaries, under the Japanese colonial government, music education there was strongly involved with the (context of) American and Japanese modern music history. I trace how Music Department at Ewha College constructed its own characteristics within Korean society in these complex circumstances, by reviewing the materials published by Ewha College and documents left by missionaries. Shedding light on the neglected part of Korean modern music history, I argue that the music education at Ewha College was closely related to political and cultural colonialism.
