ABSTRACT

American women missionaries played an important role as music teachers at the early stage of Western music in Korea. Especially, single women missionaries of WFMS were music educators at Ewha Haktang and produced musicians for churches and mission schools. Their education was a breakthrough both in quality and quantity, when they established the music department at Ewha College in 1925. It was the first institution of higher education for music in Korea. This paper investigates the foundation of the music department at Ewha College, focusing on the management of the missionary institution. First, I look into the situation of higher education and relevant statutes in the 1920s when the college course at Ewha Haktang was reorganized into Ewha College. Second, I check the actions that Ewha missionaries took for satisfying the requirements for college status. Third, I investigate the change of the school’s reputation and the careers of the graduates after Ewha was recognized as a college. With these findings, this paper aims to call attention to the dual identity of the mission school as a missionary and educational institution. Also, it retraces the practical collaborative efforts of a missionary society in the United States and Ewha missionaries in Korea for the successful operation of a missionary institution.
