ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of “Variations on a Theme by R. Schumann, Op. 20” by Clara Schumann(1819-1896) on “Variations on a Theme by R. Schumann, Op. 9” by Johannes Brahms(1833-1897) by examining ‘external factors’ (such as compositional motivations) of the composers relevant to personal relationships through certain periods of time and analyzing ‘internal features’ of the works. In order to examine the influence from the external factors, the timeline divided into three periods were used: 1) Dresden period from 1845 to 1850, 2) Düsseldorf period from 1850 to 1854, 3) Düsseldorf and Endenich period from 1854 to 1856. Within these periods, the primary sources such as person's diaries, letters, composition notes were collected and presented to support the relationships among Schumann, Clara and Brahms. To analyze the influence from the internal features of the works, the study used three categories: 1) keys, 2) originality of the subject, 3) formal structure. In conclusion, it was found that both Clara and Brahms had same compositional motivation of ‘consolation’ for individual objects who were under the influence of the three periods used by this study; however, the ‘objects’ of each motivation differed and this was regarded as the fundamental fact resulting two ‘different individual’ sets of variations as Op. 20 and Op. 9. The influence of different external factors was found in four internal features as well. Especially, the explicit use of ‘canon’ in both Op. 20 and Op. 9 was understood as personal influence of Clara's preceding use in her own work on Brahms along with the fact that Brahms was able to study counterpoint and antecedent music during the period. The placement of Clara's Op. 20 on the same level with Brahms' Op. 9 in this study implied the reconsideration of Op. 20 as an independent music work. Moreover, the necessity of further investigation on Op. 20 was suggested to improve the understanding of both Op. 20 and Op. 9.
