ABSTRACT

As a case study on musical activities of foreign missionaries, this paper traces life of three women missionaries as musicians. Ernice Lenore H. Lutz (1886-1979), Florence E. S. Boots (1896-?), Grace Blanch Z. Soltau (1886-?) that entered Korea in 1921 were American women missionaries. All of them studied in music at University and had earned their profession of music based on their career experience. At 1920-30’s, Korean students’ interest in Western music was so great that the need for professional music teachers also increased. Therefore, the influence of the three missionaries increased. Their musical activities is various included in kindergarten teacher training, promotion of various choir and chorus, various stage performances, and orchestra foundation, education in school and church as well. In addition, they involved in recording and helped Koreans study abroad to Japan and America. These activities provided us important pieces of the early western music history in Korea. The activities of female missionaries, who acted as a symbol of educational and audiovisual civilization in the daily life of Koreans, formed the basis for the change of music culture landscape.
