ABSTRACT

This study depicts the process of the Japanese composer Mayuzumi Toshiro’s transformation from a avantgarde musician to a activist for Kimigayo Singing Movement. Analyzing his works the Symphony Nirwana and Opera Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion) his devotion to Japanese tradition and Buddhist music could be regarded as a first stage to being a conservative musician. However, after his experience with Mishima Yukio's suicide in 1970, Mayuzumi turned finally to be a rightist and began speak out to appeal for public singing the Kimigayo. This study explores how his rightist thinking and activity influenced his music world and how relates music to politics.
