AB - Isang Yun’s opera Sim Tjong is greatly significant in political and socio-cultural aspects. The work was commissioned to Isang Yun to celebrate the opening of the 1972 München Olympics. Since Sim Tjong with the tale-like material could not fully reflect the world people’s universal emotion, the script was dramatized in diverse aspects. In particular, in terms of theme, the issue of ‘filial piety’ was replaced with the human existentialism to help the Westerners understand the opera easily. Thus, an opera with the universal theme was born.
In Isang Yun’s opera Sim Tjong, the chorus plays an important role in both terms of ideology and drama. The roles of chorus in his opera Sim Tjong may well be summed up as follows; first, the chorus plays the role of featuring his desired Taoism and Confucianism in the background of the opera continuously; Secondly, the chorus plays the role of developing the story or predicting the later events; Thirdly, the chorus adds a mysterious atmosphere to the opera or intensifies the dramatic effects of the opera by expressing the audience’s response; Fourthly, when the past episodes should be expressed or other setting be needed for change, the chorus would play the role of changing the scenes rapidly; Fifthly, the chorus emphasizes and highlight ‘filial piety’ or ‘containment and liberation of the human existentialism.’
