ABSTRACT

Ethel Smyth(1858-1944) was a British female composer during the Victorian-Edwardian period. As a female composer, She was confronted with social prejudice and discrimination. When she participated in the Women’s Suffrage Movement form 1901 to 1912, she was worked not only the suffragette but also composer. She composed the Songs of Sunrise(1911) for female chorus during this period and the Three Songs(1913) for voice and piano. The March of the Women which is one of the Songs of Sunrise was composed for the Suffrage Movement. The text of this work was expressed the resistance of women and the melody of that used Three Songs. This paper is to begin with a close musically link between The March of the Women and Three Songs. focus on Analysis of text and melody of Three Songs. Three Songs is the title of song's collection which include works were composed by 1913 such as The Clown, Possession and On the Road: a marching tune. This analysis will be the first step for understanding Ethel Smyth’s identity and resistance as a Woman.
