ABSTRACT

This paper offers a portrait of how women of Chosun used Western music to adapt themselves to a new time-space that was modernity and submits some conjectures about the motivations that led “Chosun” women to appreciate “Western” music. Denied opportunities for voicing their thoughts and views, women of Chosun needed empowerment by Western culture in order to transform themselves into modern women. Many women embraced Western music to make themselves proper members of society and lead their own lives as independent agents. Music, clearly, was more to these women than a channel for making their voices heard. This study thus describes diverse relations between women and music, uncovers the roots of some of the recurring images of women musicians, and illuminates hitherto obscured musical activities by women outside the mainstream establishment.
