ABSTRACT

Among the techniques applied by master composers in the past to clarify the structural connection in music, symmetry in various ways was an essential tool in composition. Among them, Palindrome played a role in emphasizing the formal, symmetrical composition or simultaneously appearing in the voices in the forward direction and reverse direction. The Palindrome structure is combined with formal structures in the music of Renaissance polyphonic composers, Bach, and it also appears in classical Haydn and romantic Brahms. The Palindrome's progress to the stage of the magic square that overcomes horizontal temporality and utilizes vertical space was pursued by Schönberg, Berg, and Webern, who applied the 12-tone technique to composition, especially in the early 20th century. Afterwards, as the direction of the numerical magic square was applied in serial music, magic squares materialized in the music structure. This paper examines the phenomena through a series of music examples showing the direction of progress and the diversity of choices based on the numerical magic square to determine the components of sound equally applied to the vertical and horizontal structure.
