AB - With the collapse of tonal music in the 20th century, music for the piano-a virtuoso instrument of tonal music-called for the establishment of a new function. Through the analysis of two piano works by Junghae Lee (1964~ ), a composer who explores the imaginary sounds, this study highlighted her experimentation on free flow and new timbre in the efforts to go beyond from the conventional expression. Piano solo Mesokosmos (2019) is a suite of four pieces that summarizes the piano techniques she has developed. It shows the contrasting sounds of resonance, static tremolo, clustered rhythmic expression, and tranquil movement in an extended tessitura. Piano Concerto poema ritmico (2014), uses rhythm as the central medium to express the vitality of rhythm particles evolving into a complete rhythmic form. String ensemble, which provides a background with free flow, merges to the dynamic sound of the piano played with various performance techniques and timbre to create unpredictable imaginary sounds. This study is expected to be an opportunity to understand her work in depth.
