ABSTRACT

Goldsmith Music Sophistication index (Gold-MSI) measures multi-dimensional aspects of human musicality. The current study examines if personality traits predict human musicality with two self-report surveys, IPIP-120, based on the Big Five personality traits and the Korean version of Gold-MSI. We translated and adapted English Gold-MSI into Korean by following recommendations from the literature on multi-language test development. This pilot study includes 35 participants (mean age=36.03 [SD=8.48] years old; 34 females). A series of multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated significant associations 1) between ‘Conscientiousness’ and ‘General Music Sophistication’, 2) between ’Openness’ and ‘Active Engagement’ and 3) between ‘Extraversion’ and ‘Active Engagement’. The partial consistencies in findings between previous studies and the current study reveals a necessity to ascertain the psychometric properties of the Korean Gold-MSI, and the relationship between musicality and personality traits, using a larger sample
