ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze topography of online political communities in Korea, which actively offer political participations and interventions by producing and publicizing political discourses on specific issues and agendas, and eventually, to elucidate the interrelations between the online political communities and real politics. Using data of political webzines and political forum websites hosted by www.rankey.com, a ranking website, I execute discourse analysis on bulletin board entries and replies as well as rank order, market share and statistical analysis on the North Korean issues. Results show that online political participation in the agenda of the North Korean issues mirrors offline political and ideological conflict structures. Furthermore, offline political conflicts between conservatives and liberals tend to have been aggravated by online politics not only because there has been a recent trend toward regimentation of political conservatives online but also because there are diversification and reorganization of political, ideological topographies taking place online. Based on these observations, I argue that results support the normalization hypothesis and its validity.
