ABSTRACT

As the online consumption of cultural contents increases, the cultural taste plays a more significant role in the informatization process. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical explanation about the influence of cultural taste on various dimensions of the digital inequality as well as to test this hypothesis. It is theoretically premised that the usage gap has become more important, while the digital divide has turned into more complex phenomena. We argue that the level of the internet use could vary depending on its benefit expectancy due to the usage and gratification theory, and that the cultural taste could be the major variable in deciding the network effect in the use of internet for pursuing happiness. Using the data gathered from the citizens of Seoul, we found out the evidence of the influence of the cultural taste on the frequency of internet use, internet writing and internet benefit expectancy. The result implies that the policies should be driven to enhance the satisfaction and expectancy level of the information poor to defuse the information inequality, and that the cooperation between the government departments and agencies is required.
