ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the current status and factors for adopting open B2B e-Commerce using the B2B network introduced in the Korean automobile industry, and to explore diffusion methods to expand the B2B network throughout the automobile industry in an efficient way. For this, 158 automobile companies were surveyed, while some major firms were interviewed for more qualitative data. The results show that there is very low awareness and adoption of the B2B network (KNX, EDI, Standardized parts information, E-catalog), while many of the firms surveyed (about 50%) have the intention of using the B2B network in the future. The major factors for adopting open B2B e-Commerce using the B2B network are defined as: government promotion of the B2B network, organizational size, task characteristics, preference for traditional transactions, transition cost due to adoption of the B2B network, lack of firms' competitiveness due to standardized business processes and transactions, non-use of the B2B network by other firms, relative benefits of the B2B network, and incompatibility of the B2B network and established technologies. These major factors can be addressed to be managed first of all for facilitating open B2B e-Commerce using the B2B network in the automobile industry by establishing concrete and specific policies and implementation strategy.
