ABSTRACT

In this paper I will first deal with the issue of how to explain scientific success while keeping eyes on its connection to the long-standing debate on scientific realism. Jarrett Leplin, in his recent book on scientific methodology, defines the concept of novel prediction, on the basis of which he argues that, on his view, quite a few scientific theories we have had in the course of scientific development come out as being successful with respect to their novel predictions, and that the success with respect to novel predictions cannot be explained unless we take the realistic approach to those scientific theories. If Leplin is right, we can have an enhanced understanding of the cornerstone of scientific success; also, we will get a very gripping argument for scientific realism. I will examine, among other things, Leplin's conditions for novel predictions, and show that they do not tally with what is actually going on in scientific practices.
