ABSTRACT

This paper aims to survey Roy Bhaskar’s dialectical transformation from his early critical realism. Bhaskar accepts Hegel’s idea of dialectical totality as a system of ontological inquiry, but does not agree with its monistic, idealistic and teleological characteristics. These characteristics make the totality “closed” which is exhausted within the absolute knowledge. This does not allow the place for the real negation or absence in principle, thus insufficient to totalize the system of the real; Rather, “open” totality is appropriate for the onto-logical purpose, and his idea of critical realism can be sustained only in that case. In this dialectical transformation of critical realism, Bhaskar successfully preserves his critique of “anthropism” which he initiated in his earlier philosophy of critical realism.
