ABSTRACT

Descartes's Moral philosophy is closely related to his theory of human beings. He presents ‘sensation’ besides thought and extension based on the dualism of mind and body. Sensation is the thing that is not occurred from only mind or body individually. Sensation can be occurred from the union of mind and body, that is, from the ‘substantial union.’ Descartes regards the ‘substantial union’ as the true human being. Descartes took pains to give the theory of the interaction between mind and body through sensation in order to complete his moral theory founded on the true understanding of human beings. We cannot sufficiently understand his theory of human beings solely by the metaphysics of the superiority of mind (to body) based on the dualism. Through this study connected with his moral theory, I aimed at, though in part, bringing into balance of the understanding of Descartes's theory of human beings.
