ABSTRACT

This paper tries to know the mechanism of sadness and a way of understanding sadness, and to explore how sadness is changed into affirmative power through conceptualization of sadness. Above all, this writing, based on experientialism perspective which sees 'embodied mind' as its core, suggested by Lakoff and Johnson, explores sadness which is an aspect of 'embodied mind'. And this study views 'mechanism of emotional manifestation' to explore how sadness is manifested based on the basic argument of cognitive biology of A. Damasio. Furthermore, based on the discussion in the fields of Philosophy of Language and Cognitive Linguistics, this study investigates the way in which conceptualizing sadness is made. Through exploration for emotion of sadness based on human body, two layers of sadness are reviewed. This study also looks into trial where emotion of sadness is moralized from the point of ‘moral sadness’, ‘moralizing sadness’, and ‘moral imagination’ by Mencius. Finally, instead of conclusion, ‘process of symbolizing sadness’ is proceeded with discussion of ‘rolling on the waves with sadness’. I have this point of view that abstract emotion of 'sadness' is originated from 'embodied mind' and sadness is reproduced - amplified or reduced - but does not continue forever, in the end, will disappear.
