ABSTRACT

This study has two targets. The one is that this is a discussion about modeling of the Confucian understanding of the mind in order to compare with the understandings from the other academic fields or the other cultural contexts. The other is to characterize the Confucian way of the understanding of the mind as principles distinguished from others. Most important sources for this study come from the Neo-Confucianism in Chosun Korea Dynasty with 5 kinds of diagrams which described the structure of the whole scale of the mind, activities of the mind and some kinds of relationships among elements of lower ranking or between the mind and the world, and so on. Even though most sources come from the Korean Confucianism, but this study also keeps researches on the Confucianism developed in Chinese context from Pre-Qin era to Song and Ming Dynasties because the Korean Confucianism had developed on the basis of the Chinese Confucianism. The details of this study are as follow. Firstly, root metaphors which provide a fundamental frame of understanding of the mind are told as heart metaphor followed with a container metaphor and a space metaphor, and told as a changeable thing followed with idea of mind’s growth and falling ill metaphor as like a body does. Secondly, kinds of integrated model of the mind which shows the whole structure of the mind and relationships of inside elements and outside world are explained. Thirdly, the Confucian understanding of the relationship between the nature and the emotions(feelings) which is regarded as the preceding track before all the conscious activities and the dualized context of the human mind and the principle mind are studied as the important features. Finally slight indication rising inside the mind which is regarded as the proto-signature to be good or to be evil resulted in the behaviour is analyzed as the evidence that Confucian understanding of the mind signifies the first-person methodology for the successful mind-learning.
