AB - Carneades, who completed Academic Scepticism, hold an important place in the history of ancient Academic scepticism. He did well in maintaining Academic scepticism from Arcesilaus and sought into the problem of the ability to act in terms of the convincing impression (pithane phantasia). As a result, the horizon of Academic scepticism was further expanded. This Carneades’ scepticism consists of three characteristics.
First, Carneades views the convincing impression as having criterion of truth. By emphasizing this notion, he criticizes epistemological arrogance implicated in notion of dogmatic assent of Chrysippus. Futhermore, By investigating the untrue representations derived from the real things he successfully exposed breaking point within the Stoic’s criterion of truth, that is to say kataleptic impression.
Second, in respond to the problem of apraxia(the argument of inaction) of the Stoics, Carneades examines the ability to act, and offers the convincing impression as an alternative to it. This is different from Arcesilaus’ view, which continues to adhere to the principle of suspension of judgement. Carneades restricts the principle partly in a desperate attempt to meet scope of pithane phantasia. In this sense, he was the moderate sceptic or the mitigated sceptic.
Third, Carneades claimed that belief(doxa) makes our daily life live if it was deliberated thoroughly even though it is an incomplete belief. Thus when he says that the sage has belief according to the convincing impression, what he said about belief is not negative doxa which the Stoics thought but affirmative belief which anyone, who has common sense, can consent.
In conclusion, it was philosopher, Carneades that shows a new potentiality about how the Sceptic can live a meaningful life simultaneously through notion of the convincing impression. Although Pyrrhonists including Sextus Empiricus criticizes his philosophy severely, he is a person who accomplished scepticism. After that time, The New Academics could acquire well proportioned attitude in the problem of theory and practice.
