ABSTRACT

This paper aims to explain Nammyeong’s ideas in terms of continuity with Cheng Brothers’ Neo-Confucianism. Especially he was concerned of ‘view of the teacher’s role(師道論)’ and ‘issue of moving forward and moving back(出處論)’, which theories were influenced by Cheng Brother. Nammyeong’s excavation of Cheng Brother’s idea is one of reconstructing Neo-Confucianism in the Song dynasty. In fact, this kind of approach was a common way in the sixteenth century’s Zhuzixue(朱子學) in China and Chosun. In other words, scholars were starting to investigate Cheng Brother’s Neo-Confucianism to criticize and reflect of formalized Zhuzixue. We can find the ‘simultaneity of the non-simultaneity’, it means the simultaneous phenomenon of acceptance and transformation of Zhuzixue in the sixteenth century’s Chosun- Confucianism. Nammyeong also applied his understanding and reflection about Zhuzixue into his theory. In this article, I will make it clear that Nammyeong tried to reconstruct Zhuzixue through Cheng Brother’s idea, especially ‘view of the teacher’s role’ and ‘issue of moving forward and moving back.’
