AB - Purpose: This study aimed to develop a theory-based handoff education program using Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation protocol for new nurses and to test its feasibility and preliminary effects on their communication abilities and positive psychological capital. Methods: A repeated measure experimental design was used for a group of 34 new nurses working in the medical-surgical wards of a tertiary hospital in G city, South Korea. Data were collected at baseline, one month, and three months using validated self-reported questionnaires. The education program included face-to-face lectures, role-plays, and discussion sessions. Descriptive statistics were performed on the samples and variables. Repeated measure ANOVA analyses were used to test the research hypotheses. Results: Among four sub-factors of positive psychological capital, the levels of self efficacy and hope significantly improved compared with baseline and one-month levels post-intervention (F= 4.87, p=.013; F= 3.62, p=.040, respectively). Communication abilities of nurses improved over time but the differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrated feasibility evidence and some improvements in positive psychological capital among new nurses following the intervention program. Further studies are needed to test long-term effects on outcomes with larger and diverse nurses with a control group.
