ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors influencing patient-centered care as perceived by older adult patients admitted for long-term hospitalization. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 190 adults aged 65 years or older who were admitted to S long-term care hospital in B City. Data were collected over one month, from November 1 to November 30, 2023, and analyzed using frequencies and percentages, means and standard deviations, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS Windows version 26.0. Results: The participants’ perceived autonomy support from healthcare providers averaged 83.66±8.53, empathic competence of healthcare providers averaged 41.16±4.24, patient-centered care environment averaged 83.55±7.11, and overall patient-centered care scored 131.78±9.84. A significant difference in perceived patient-centered care was found based on the number of comorbidities (t=-2.08, p=.039), with patients having four or more comorbidities scoring higher than those with one to three. Factors influencing perceived patient-centered care were statistically significant (F=25.26, p<.001): empathic competence of healthcare providers (β=0.33, p<.001), patient-centered care environment (β=0.25, p<.001), and the number of comorbidities (β=0.18, p=.003). The model had an explanatory power of 33.9%. Conclusion: Improving the empathic competence of healthcare providers to address the physical and mental challenges faced by older adult patents, while considering their life history, is essential. Additionally, active support is needed to establish a patient-centred care environment that prioritizes the safety and daily routines of older adult patients in long-term care facilities.
