ABSTRACT

Purpose: In this study, we aimed to examine the longitudinal pathways among family-related stressors (e.g., marital conflict, economic strain, intergenerational tension and burdens), perceived daily stress, and depressive symptoms in middle-aged Korean women. Methods: This secondary analysis used data from waves 1 to 9 (2007~2022) of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families. The sample comprised 2,869 women aged 40~59 years at baseline (Wave 1, 2007) with continuity of marital status across all waves. Marital conflict was assessed in wave 1; economic strain and intergenerational tension and burdens in waves 1 and 3; perceived daily stress in waves 4~6; and depressive symptoms in waves 7~9. Structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood estimation was used to test the hypothesized longitudinal pathways. Results: The structural model showed acceptable fit (x 2 =177.75, p<.001, comparative fit index=0.92, root mean square error of approximation=0.05). Perceived daily stress was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (β=0.22, p<.001). Marital conflict (β=0.11, p=.005) and economic strain (β=0.12, p<.001) significantly predicted perceived daily stress, whereas intergenerational tension and burdens did not (p=.384). Conclusion: These longitudinal relationships highlight the need for nurses to assess marital conflict and economic strain from a long-term perspective and to screen for stress and depressive symptoms in middle-aged women.
