ABSTRACT

This study explores the transformative potential of writing in fostering positive self-identity and subject formation among Korean marriage migrant women, and proposes Korean autobiographies as a means of achieving this goal. Following a 12-week “Korean Autobiography-writing” program, in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants to examine the internal and external changes they experienced. The analysis revealed six key components that shed light on the experiences of marriage migrant women writing autobiographies in Korean: recognition of emotions, community support, empathetic connections, transcending outsider status, empowerment through documentation, and a sense of belonging. These components indicate that writing Korean autobiographies enables marriage migrant women to acknowledge their emotions and establish firm roots in their adopted communities, thus transcending the boundaries of unfamiliarity. By positioning marriage migrant women as active agents in their narratives, this study advocates for their recognition as social subjects, moving beyond mere integration narratives.
