ABSTRACT

This study examines the changing patterns of international marriage in Korea, focusing on naturalized Koreans. This study uses comprehensive marriage registration data to analyze the characteristics of couples involving naturalized individuals and the broader trends shaping these unions. The findings indicate that marriages involving naturalized women are concentrated in specific countries, with a particularly high proportion of foreign men marrying naturalized women from their country of origin. These marriages tend to exhibit greater homogeneity, including smaller age gap and higher educational similarities between partners. The study also found that the likelihood of marrying a foreign spouse is higher when the woman is younger and the couple’s age difference is smaller. In both China and Vietnam, lower educational attainment among women is linked to a higher probability of marrying a foreign spouse, suggesting that naturalized women with lower socioeconomic status are more likely to marry foreign men. By highlighting these trends, this study enhances the understanding of international marriage patterns in Korea and provides valuable insights for policymaking related to multicultural communities and foreign residents.
