ABSTRACT

Korean society is rapidly transforming into a multicultural society, creating a growing need for educational approaches that foster cultural diversity and sensitivity. In particular, the Home Economics area of the Technology·Home Economics curriculum in middle and high schools addresses topics closely related to students’ lives—such as family, lifestyle, and community—making it a key domain for implementing multicultural education. However, systematic analysis of how multicultural content is reflected in curricula and textbooks has been limited. This study employed content analysis to examine multicultural education content in the Technology·Home Economics curriculum and textbooks from the 2007 to the 2022 revisions, based on Banks’ (2019) five dimensions of multicultural education: content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy, and empowering school culture. Findings indicate that earlier revisions primarily reflected content integration in a formal manner, while recent revisions emphasize respect for cultural diversity and the development of critical thinking. Middle school textbooks were found to incorporate multicultural education more concretely than high school textbooks. Based on these results, future curricula and textbooks should ensure balanced integration of the five dimensions, diversify textbook activities to promote critical thinking and cultural sensitivity, strengthen teacher training for cultural awareness, and expand institutional support for school culture. This study provides a foundation for enhancing the direction and practical application of multicultural education in Home Economics and is expected to serve as a valuable reference for curriculum development, textbook writing, teacher training, and instructional design.
