ABSTRACT

The main purpose of the paper is to make an argument that spatial interaction studies can be seen as a consilient subfield of human geography. For this, I seek to clarify the nature of spatial interaction data and present the main subject matter of the studies. The uniqueness of spatial interaction data is appreciated with respect to spatial data analysis, GIS, and geovisualization. The main subject matter, given as subject-method associations, includes exploratory analysis, regional structure analysis, functional regionalization, statistical modeling, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and spatial accessibility analysis. Spatial interaction studies as a consilient subfield in human geography are expected to facilitate both methodological borrowing and thematic fusion.
