AB - 本論文では1930年から1940年にかけて、日本語敎授法やその指導內容が、讀み・書き中心から話す能力を强調する形に轉換したことを、外國語敎授法としての日本語敎授のありかを問いつつ、そのための敎授法の提供につとめた山口を中心として考察した。とりわけ、1942年、國語文化講座第6卷「國語進出編」に揭載の「東洋人に對する國語敎授法」という山口の論文を取り上げ、文字から言語へと移り行く言語學上の流れをいかに敎授法の問題として表出できるかという課題に取り組んだ山口を取り卷く時代的な狀況を明らかにしようとしたのである。
本論文を通じて、山口は何よりも從來の文字中心の敎育に偏って行われている自國語敎育の問題提起に止まらず、外國語敎育における諸問題にも疑問を投げ掛けていたことが明らかになった。また、その問題の打開策の一つとして談話敎育の立場を堅持したことも明らかにできた。そして、その際には授業を日本語で行わなければならないとする提案をしているが、これこそ山口の言う日本語の言語現實のなかで實現できる直接法の具現であったものと考えられる。これもなお、日本語敎育において實踐的なコミュニケーション機能を重視する山口の認識の所産に他ならない。
