ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to verify the validity of my reconstruction Wei rhyme(微韻) [ ii] and [ iui] in Zhi rhyme group(止攝), using the literature on Sino-Korean, Manyō Kana or Japanese phonetic alphabet, Modern Chinese dialects, Sino-Vietnamese and Sino-Tibetan. The main grounds are as follows:First, in kaikou final all the initials in Wei rhyme are /의/ in Sino-Korean,whereas in hekou final velars and laryngeals are /위/, bilabials /이/. The fact that kaikou and hekou final both have /이/([i]) represents the vowel and ending of Wei rhyme in Ancient Chinese is [i]. Second, the sound value of the other i or ï in Old Japanese has similar sound quality to Wei rhyme, the former [ i i](or [ ii]), the latter [ ii] and [ i ui]. The reason that Manyō Kanas in kaikou final were made few use of seems to have something to do with the medial of the third division for which ones in hekou final were substituted. Third, Sino-Vietnamese has [i] and [ui], which have the same sound value to Sino-Korean. Finally, bilabials in Sino-Tibetan were reflected as yi[ji]. It appears that being based on y[j] the medial was not [ i], but [ i].
