Merchant in Premodern Era of Japan and Merchant’s Family Business

ABSTRACT

Traditional modes of business and management in Edo period played the role as preconditions in modernization process of Japan. Those business customs exhibit a strong connection with the country’s history. The legendary commercial capital of the modern businesses led the way to the emergence of some business magnates. Their capital contributed a great deal to the modernization of Japan. In addition, the respect for business was compatible with the culture and traditional value systems of Japan, which also conduced to the modernization process. Meanwhile, premodern business customs has been transmitted to the contemporary business world of Japan. This research covers the meaning, behavior patterns, and systemic development of merchant's family in Edo period of Japan.
