ABSTRACT

This study examined the May 18 1980 Gwangju Democracy Movement in terms of the meaning of records on Korean modern history depicted in “Hope! Revive,” a drama written by Go Chan-Yoo, a Korean living in Japan. Go Chan-Yoo’s drama about the Gwangju Democracy Movement had value when it was created in October 1980, immediately following the Movement. The drama received positive feedback from both the Japanese and Koreans living in Japan; Koreans living in Japan, especially, this drama represented their nation. However, there were only a few studies on Go Chan-Yoo, as he was hardly known in Korea. His drama “Hope! Revive” (光よ!甦れ) was written in Korean based on videos of the May 18 Gwangju reported in Japan at the time, and magazines that published Korean political history. This study examined the individuals who wrote about Korean political history, and the desires of Koreans living in Japan, which served as the basic materials for the drama, with a focus on the historical facts reflected in “Hope! Revive.”
