ABSTRACT

We examined the meaning of “TARISITE”, which appears to be a combination of Japanese parallel particles “TARI” and “SITE”, we particularly focused on “P-TARISITE” which is used alone at the end of sentences. We made attempts to position it semantically based on the modality point of view. Prior research, has confirmed that there are some special meanings such as qualitative usage, joke usage, and virtual situations other than the original meaning of some enumerations and implications. In addition, the process of selecting one possibility out of several situations P₁P₂P₃... from a speech situation indicates that “KAMOSIRENAI” and “P-TARISITE” are similar, and based on the relationship between the speech situation and P₁P₂P₃..., speech intention is considered in detail. The result, indicated that “P-TARISITE” is a possibility judgment that represents the possibility of extreme cases, and that “P-TARISITE” in joke usage can be considered an expression strategically used by the speaker for the same possibility judgment. In addition, we considered the composition of “P-TARISITE”, independence of grammatical form, connection relation with question/negative statement/polite form, sentence end expression, lexical expression, relaxed expression of predication, modality, and semantically extreme examples. Thus, “P-TARISITE” can be considered a from of epistemic modality that can not take the form of question, denial, or politeness in terms of formality.
