ABSTRACT

This study attempts to analyze the characteristics of foreign, non-Japanese words that have been converted into Japanese as Katakana. The recent increase of Katakana in Japan is remarkable, and the prevalence of sentences that are difficult to understand is surging. From political speeches to book-length publications, Katakana can be found everywhere, and it has become very unlikely to encounter text without Katakana. Such a phenomenon can be said to be a natural result of today's increasingly globalized world, but because the rate of globalization is so fast, there are people who cannot keep up with its effects, especially the elderly. Therefore, in this study we examine how katakana is created, how it is used, and its directionality, and we will also attempt to identify the traits of a desirable form of Katakana that can be accepted by a wide range of generations.
