ABSTRACT

The present study analyzed the Korean language transcriptions of vowel components in Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period and examined the patterns of transcriptions in Japanese language primers. The results confirmed that it was often the case that “normative transcriptions” did not match “practical transcriptions” in Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period, and it seems that vowel components may have been transcribed not from letters but directly from phonetic sounds. Additionally, the authors of Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period seem to have recognized affrication in Korean; thus, they likely had a certain level of linguistic knowledge.
