ABSTRACT

This study of the pioneering work of ghost stories of modern Hyakumonogatari investigates one side of the perception of the other world for modern Japanese by examining the time and space of such described worlds, the Yokai's which belong to the other world, and contacts between humans and the other. Fifty-five of 100 ghost stories contained in “Syokoku Hyakumonogatari” are examined in this article. Consequently, the percept ion of the other world shown in “Syokoku Hyakumonogatari” may be summarized as follows. First, the other world was considered a boundary of time and space according to traditional Japanese folklore. Second, this study found that Yokai were conceived as being human-like or, more accurately, female. Third, this study has shown that mutual visits between worlds were conceived as being possible, not simply one-sided. Fourth, the human world was considered to be the place of confrontation between the mortal and the spirit plane. In conclusion, these tales overwhelmingly recognized that contacts between the mortal and spiritual plane had a mostly negative effect on humans.
