ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to clarify context and policy regarding the live broadcasting of Japanese popular songs at the Kanto-Dalian Broadcasting Station, which was under Japanese rule in the pre-war, early Showa period of 1932-1933. It can be said that the broadcast policy of Japanese popular songs in 1932-1933 was formed in an experimental period that adjusted the policy of the“small broadcast period”and had a role in affecting the policy of the“mass broadcast period”thereafter. The elucidation of broadcasting policy and the social factors of the time are of significance in the clarification of the “overall policy” of the pre-war Dalian Broadcasting Station. In this research, we consider the context in which the policy on popular songs broadcasted by Kanto-Dalian Broadcasting Station was formed. The analysis of data such as broadcast times and the contents of the broadcast program tables published in the radio section of the Manchuria Daily newspaper, published in Manchuria in the 1932-1933 period, clarifies the above. Through an analysis of the audience constituents in Dalian Japanese society, we identify the social factors that formed this policy.
