ABSTRACT

Objectives We examined the clinical applicability of the Sasang constitutional diagnosis method described in 『Sasang-Bangyakhappyeon』. Method We translated and analyzed the sections related to Sasang constitutional diagnosis in 『Sasang-Bangyakhappyeon』 into Korean and compared the content with 6 major books on Sasang medicine. Results and Conclusion The diagnosis method in 『Sasang-Bangyakhappyeon』 includes seven criteria (inspection(望診), inquiry(問診), listening and smelling examination(聞診), palpation(切診), body diagnosis(體珍), herbal diagnosis(藥診), and acupuctural diagnosis(鍼診)) for constitutional diagnosis and principles for constitutional diagnosis. Following a comparison of the seven differentiation criteria with 6 major books on Sasang constitutional medicine, they were applied similar criteria, like each constitution has its original symptomology such as helathy Soyangin has easy defecation and healthy Taeeumin has brisk perspiration. Only herbal diagnosis(藥診) and acupucture diagnosis(鍼診) were confirmed as unique diagnostic methods not found in other books. It is thought that further research is necessary to confirm whether herbal diagnosis(藥診) and acupuctural diagnosis(鍼診) suggested in 『Sasang-Bangyakhappyeon』 are suitable methods for clinical use alongside existing diagnostic methods.
