ABSTRACT

Objectives This paper was aimed to review the preceding research on the origins, changes and constructive principle of Hwalsuckgosamtang. Method Based on Jema Lee’s works such as Dongyisusebowon and Dongmuyoogo, we analyzed contents related to Hwalsuckgosamtang and its modification. Moreover, we reviewed physiological and pathological pecularities of Soyangin symptomatology and applied the theory to induce the principle of the modified Hwalsuckgosamtang in Sasang medicine. Results and Conclusion 1) The origins of Hwalsuckgosamtang might be Hyungbangpaedoksan, Jeoryeongtang, Sohamhyungtang, Dojuksan and Samryeongtang. 2) Hwalsuckgosamtang had been changed in composition when it reconstructed from Samryeongsan and Sihosaryeongsan. 3) Hwalsuckgosamtang consists of a) Osterici seu Notopterygii Radix et Rhizoma(羌活), Araliae Cordatae Rhizoma(獨活), Schizonepetae Herba(荊芥) and Saposhnikoviae Radix(防風) which scatter the Pyohan(表寒) and make the Pyoeum(表陰) drop, b) Talcum(滑石) which clears heat from the Large Intestine(淸大腸熱), c) Poria Sclerotium(茯苓) and Alismatis Rhizoma(澤瀉) which make Lee-su(利水) effect, d) Coptidis Rhizoma(黃連) which effectively clears excessive heat and fire from the chest region(大淸熱胸中之火) e) Phellodendri Cortex(黃柏) which effectively clears excessive heat and fire from the lumbar region(大淸腰脊之火), f) Sophorae Radix(苦蔘) which adjust the internal qi(和解裏氣).
