ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study explores the Sokcho Lion Mask Play, an intangible cultural heritage of Gangwon Province, transmitted by displaced communities from North Korea’s South Hamgyong Province. It examines how this K-folk drama, preserved in Abai Village (Cheongho-dong), contributes to community identity and serves as a cultural link between North and South Korea. Methods: Through literature review and fieldwork, including performance observation and practitioner interviews, the study analyzes the play’s structure, music, instruments, and dance forms. Ethnographic methods are used to understand its five-part, ten-scene composition and its transmission within the local community. Conclusions: The Sokcho Lion Mask Play functions as more than a folk performance—it is a medium for preserving displaced identity and fostering inter-Korean cultural continuity. Its sustained transmission reflects the role of intangible heritage in maintaining cultural identity across generations and regions.
