ABSTRACT

The late Woo Byeong-ik (1933–2025) was a pioneering journalist who laid the foundation for cultural heritage journalism in Korea and forged an independent professional path within the press. Settling in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Silla, from the 1960s onward, he closely observed archaeological excavations and the discovery of cultural properties across the region and took the lead in conveying these developments to the public. Woo was far more than a regional reporter. By promptly reporting major excavation news, including the unearthing of nationally significant Silla artifacts, he effectively established the role of the “cultural heritage specialist journalist,” a field previously absent from Korean journalism. His reporting went beyond the delivery of breaking news, contributing to the elevation of cultural heritage as a central social and cultural issue within public discourse. Through his work, cultural assets were reframed not merely as objects of the past but as shared cultural values requiring collective attention and preservation. Woo Byeong-ik’s journalistic legacy thus occupies a crucial position in the history of Korean media and cultural heritage communication.
