ABSTRACT

7090 retro period K-dramas enrich the depth of space and storytelling through the close integration of regionality and narrative. The historical contexts and landscapes of places such as Gwangju, Jeju, Seoul, and Busan function not merely as backdrops but as meaningful elements that actively shape narrative development. For instance, in When Life Gives You Tangerines, Jeju Island plays a central role in forming an affective atmosphere in which the island’s natural environment, local language, and historical scars are intricately intertwined. Such uses of space reveal the distinctive narratives and identities embedded in each region while simultaneously revaluing their cultural assets. Ultimately, 7090 retro period K-dramas do not simply evoke nostalgia for the past; they operate as emotional mirrors that reflect the present. These mirrors connect generational divides, revive forgotten memories, and invite reflection on fundamental human emotions that traverse past and present. In this sense, such cultural content reminds us that what we most need today is a shared emotional language grounded in empathy. Looking ahead, the continued emotional expansion of K-dramas—creatively reworking modern Korean history in diverse ways—holds considerable promise.
