ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to deal the problem of foreign students dropping out based on a qualitative research method from the perspective of the ‘foreign student’ and to suggest a solution. Most of the local colleges have been covering university’s quota and finances. In particular, local universities are intensively attracting Vietnamese students and are operating Korean language education centers and university faculties. As a side effect of this, there are problems of foreign students’ dropout of local universities. In order to diagnose the causes and solutions of these problems, in-depth interviews were conducted with Vietnamese students studying at a private university in Busan in this study. In this study, paying attention to the fact that foreign students are studying and working at the same time, we examined the dropout problem from an insider’s point of view. As a result of an in-depth interview, it was confirmed that the perceptions of ‘dropout’ and ‘illegal stay’ among those involved in the Korean language training course can be broadly classified into four categories. The summary of contents is as follows: the process of the study abroad and the perception of the economic cost, labor as an international student, the dropout of language trainees, and Korean language learning.
