ABSTRACT

The letter Bashō sent to his brother Hanjaemon tells us that he feels sorry for having not helped the needy in the midst of a difficult economic situation in his hometown. The fact that Hanjaemon first explained “The Okunohosomiti Kikō” plan which was the turning point of his literary activity is an important episode that indirectly confirms that Bashō has systematically planned and performed his literary activities. The letter is the only letter left by Bashō as a handwritten letter, which is an important letter that shows brotherly love in a letter that seriously expresses his sad heart before death. In this way, it can be confirmed that Bashō is not enough to confirm brotherhood in the letter sent to Hanjaemon. It is important to note that the letter written by Bashō shows the longing and care of the family, and Bashō, which represents the contemporary Haikai literature, first reveals the activity plan of his literary work. The letters sent by Bashō to Hanjaemon can confirm the soft and simple appearance of human Bashō. However, in the way of the writer, I can evaluate it as an important episode that can confirm the strong will of Bashō who goes his way without hesitating before death.
