ABSTRACT

This study examines and compares the personified deities of Okinawan Utaki and Jeju’s Dang. The following similarities were observed: First, the gender of the deity is distinctly evident. Second, the deities are revered as transcendental, which can be inferred from their origins and characteristics in local myths. On the other hand, the following differences were noted: First, Okinawa has instances where female deities marry human males, while in the case of Jeju, deities do not marry humans but marry among themselves. Second, two types of deities are present in Okinawa: those revered from the outset and those enshrined after their death in Utaki. In contrast, deities in Jeju are revered from the beginning. Third, Okinawa has a concept of deities being regarded as the ancestors of villages, whereas, in Jeju, there are no such blood relationships between deities and village people. Fourth, the characteristics of deities in Okinawa are not limited to a single or specific type; they have developed a complex and layered nature over time. By contrast, in Jeju, deities initially appear as a single type of deity revered from the outset.
