ABSTRACT

This study examines the current status and challenges facing eldercare robots in Japan. Since becoming a super-aged society in 2007, Japan has struggled with a shortage of caregivers. In response to the growing older adult population, significant resources have been invested in the research and development of care robots. Despite these efforts over an extended period, eldercare robots have not gained widespread adoption in the field of caregiving. The primary reasons for their limited use are high costs and low efficiency. While advancements in technology are expected to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of care robots, challenges remain. These include achieving economies of scale due to the small market size and the need for customization. Although there is optimism about future developments in robots, considerable attention should also be given to improving the treatment of human caregivers, who currently endure low pay and perform physically demanding work.
