ABSTRACT

This study was to examine the effect of aroma head and neck massage on sleep disturbance, problematic behaviors, blood serotonin, blood cortisol, and the vital signs in elders with dementia. The research design was the one-group pre test-post test study. The participants were 45 persons about over 65 years elderly with dementia. It was been studied from May of 2013, to October of 2013. The research method is to do aroma neck massage total 6 sessions for 10-15 minutes. The collected data were analyzed the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. There were significant decrease in sleep disturbance, problem behaviors, and depression. And there were significant differences in blood pressure, serotonin, and cortisol after providing aroma head and neck massage. The results provided that head and neck massage was an effective the sleep disturbance, problem behaviors and depression of elderly with dementia. Therefore, the aromatherapy and head and neck massage could be recommended as a nursing intervention for enhancing quality of life in older adults with dementia
