ABSTRACT

The key thesis of this paper is to analyze the impact of social capital (general trust) and civic engagement (volunteering and giving) on Nimbyism, an attitude ascribed to persons who object to the siting of unwanted public facilities in their own neighborhood. To explore this, a growth mixture model was applied to the Korean Welfare Panel Study (2006-2015). The results showed that three latent classes were identified (low-rapidity NIMBYism, mid-rapidity NIMBYism, and high-rapidity NIMBYism), and that general trust, volunteering and giving not only lowered but also enhanced NIMBYism, depending on how fast NIMBYism increased. Finally, theoretical and policy implications of these findings were discussed
