ABSTRACT

Currently, age-related voting behavior analyses are largely being classified by the age effect and the generation effect. The way which understands the aging as the increase in voting experience and a habituation process of voting may provide another perspective on the age. This essay is aiming to draw a line between intuitive factors and rational factors which influenced on the voter’s decision for a candidate in the 19th Korean National Assembly elections, and to find out if there are some differences in the decision making process by age. In such a case it will be needed to identify the voting behavior of the age group with more intuitive tendency in decision making. For those purposes, Daniel Kahneman’s behavioral economics is introduced such as the principle of intuitive judgment and conscious reasoning, heuristics and biases, and prospect theory. After that the impact of age on intuitiveness and rationality is analyzed. The analysis shows the following result: the younger people in their twenties and thirties voted based on reasoning which calculates policy, campaign pledges, and political career of candidates. Compared with them, the older groups tend to rely heavily on intuitive factors, for example party, personality traits, and personal relations.
