ABSTRACT

This article tried to focus on the areas of empathy and emotion of the May 18, which had not been paid attention to while approaching the rational analysis frame. Approaching the May 18 from the perspective of empathy-emotional theory is fundamentally different from the social scientific interpretation centered on rationalism, which has understood all collective action as an expression of irrationality and the result of the collapse of reason and rationality. This study suggested four characteristics of empathy-emotion theory. First, the interpretation of empathy and emotion based on social interaction, second, the role of emotion as a source of action ability, third, the conceptual expansion of the life world based on empathy theory, and fourth, social consensus from a long-term perspective that is accumulated and reproduced. The reason for analyzing the May 18 using the empathetic sphere concept is to examine the dynamics of social emotions created through personal experiences and empathy with others and communities. In particular, through the concept of the empathetic sphere, I would like to suggest a new interpretation possibility of how the May 18 drove citizens' participation in Gwangju during the uprising, and furthermore, it was able to sustain itself for a long time at the center of the struggle for democratization in Korean society.
